Matthew Coyte was born in the United Kingdom and received a bachelor’s degree in GeoPhysics from the University of Bath. In the early 1990s Matt moved to New Mexico where he obtained his J.D. from UNM. Since graduation Matt has practiced almost exclusively in the areas of criminal defense and civil rights law. In 2013 Matt was recognized nationally as Public Justice’s Trial Lawyer of the Year. In 2014 the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime invited Matt to be part of an expert panel on tackling corruption in prisons and jails throughout the world. The meeting was held in Vienna, Austria and a handbook on anti-corruption measures is in the process of being developed as a result. Matt is the current President of the Board of the New Mexico Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.
